Salvia haenkei: A vigorous red sage from the Andes
The discovery: A jewel of the Andes
Salvia haenkei is a shrubby sage native to the mountainous regions of Peru and Bolivia. This plant was discovered and described by the Swiss botanist Édouard André in the 19th century, after observing its unique flora in the Andes. It was not until the 20th century that this sage was widely recognized and cultivated beyond its natural habitat, where it flowers spectacularly.

Horticultural Uses and Prospects
Use
Salvia haenkei is ideal for Mediterranean-style gardens or sunny, well-drained areas. It can be planted in beds, borders or as a background plant. Its upright habit and bright flowers make it a striking plant in any garden, as well as being an excellent addition to attract pollinators.
Ornamental Value
Its green foliage and bright red flowers make it a very decorative plant. It can be incorporated into themed gardens, particularly those focusing on colour or drought resistance. It forms a pretty, compact but vigorous shrub that will remain a focal point in the garden for several months thanks to its long flowering period.

Gardener's Tip: Growing Salvia haenkei Successfully
Position: Choose a location in full sun to light shade. This sage needs warmth to thrive, but will tolerate light shade.
Soil: Well-drained, light, dry to moderately fertile soil. Drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Care:
Watering: Water sparingly, making sure not to leave standing water.
Pruning: In early spring, prune the stems by 2/3 to encourage new growth and maintain a compact shape.
Fertilizing: A light addition of compost or organic fertilizer early in the season can help stimulate growth.
Winter Protection: Although this sage is quite hardy, in winter it will benefit from mulching around the stump to protect its roots. In case of severe frost, a winter fleece can also be used to protect the plant.
